Daughters of the King

The Daughters of the King are members of a lay order for women in the Episcopal Church.  Members undertake a Rule of Life, incorporating the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service.  By the reaffirmation of promises made at Confirmation, a Daughter pledges herself to a life-long program of prayer, service and evangelism, dedicated to the spread of Christ's kingdom and to the strengthening of her parish.

The Rule of Prayer
A daughter vows to pray daily for the spread of Christ's kingdom, especially among women and girls, for God's blessing on the members of the order and for the spiritual growth of her parish.

The Rule of Service
A Daughter vows to participate regularly in the worship, study and work of her church; to undertake a personal program of evangelism through prayer and service, working to bring others to Christ through His church; and to assist the rector wherever possible for the spiritual growth of the parish.

The order of the Daughters of the King was founded in 1885 in New York City by Margaret J. Franklin and a group of women who wanted to implement the vows they took at confirmation "to work, pray and give for the spread of Christ's kingdom."

The emblem of the order is a silver pin in the form of a Greek cross which members wear at all times.  The Latin words on the cross, "Magnanimiter Crucem Sustine," mean "with heart, mind and sprit, uphold and bear the Cross."  The initials FHS signify "For His Sake."

Applicants serve a three month period of preparation before taking their vows.

Since the Daughters of the King is an order, chapters are not allowed to sponsor or conduct moneymaking projects in the name of the order.  Any funds or offerings are self denial or free will giving.

Motto of the Order

For His Sake...
I am but one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything; but I can do something.
What I can do, I ought to do.
What I ought to do, by the Grace of God, I will do.
Lord, what will you have me do?

In 2008, our Daughters of the King celebrated the 20th anniversary of their chapter at St. Stephen's.  St. Teresa of Avila Chapter was chartered and instituted on October 9, 1988 with six new members and two more transferring in.  Kathy Everett led the group through the mandatory three months of preparation and study.

Currently, the chapter has 23 members, most of whom participate not only in DOK-centered activities, but also many other ministries of the parish and outside the parish as well.

Our usual meeting times are:  the first Sunday of each moth following the second service for review of our prayer list, planning, business and housekeeping; and 9:00 a.m. on the third Saturday when we meet for Bible study and devotions.

During the year our DOK chapter sponsors Quiet Days which are open to anyone wishing to participate -- women and men alike.  A Quiet Day consists of a quiet morning with teachings and times for reflection, usually ending with a light lunch.

Some of us also have attended the diocesan DOK retreat held annually in May at Spring Canyon Camp in the foothills near Buena Vista, Colorado.  It is a wonderful time of prayer, study, reflection and learning as well as fellowship with members of other chapters across the state.

Any woman interested in more information may contact Barbara Bureau (current chapter leader) or talk to any other member wearing a "Daughters" silver cross.  Additionally, you may contact the church office for more information.
